I got six neons last week. One died overnight, probably because it was deformed and I didn't notice til I got home. The rest seemed to be doing fine. Then last night another one disappeared. I can't find it at all, alive or dead. I literally ripped the tank apart trying to find it and I think I found the answer. MAGIC! With the hood being on the neon couldn't have jumped out unless its a superfish that can lift ten thousand times its own weight. It couldn't have been completely eaten yet, I don't have very big fish to skeletonize it overnight. So I am just going to have to assume that it used its magical powers to transport itself back to its natural environment..... or New Jersey.

I will have to try to get some more neons tommorrow.

Or kribs. When I first started out with fishkeeping I made the mistake of mixing kribs with neons. Very quickly all neons had disappeared along with most my plants, while the kribs had gotten fatter...

I had that very problem when I started my tank, but I know where they went :/ My jacks ate them.
so I went to something bigger and faster... tiger barbs... thus far over a month none lost and none showing signs of stress.

Yes, small fish dissapearing is common with many people on this forum i have seen. Trust me, they are in there somewhere. Unless they can life that cover.

we stupidly put a lovely pair of kribs in with our neons(bad advice from lfs) & they did the same disappearing act as yours...........we even blamed the barbs & were going to trade them in until one dark night i witnessed the murderous culprits at their work!!!!! naughty kribs were taken back to where they came from & we have now had 11 neons in our tank for about 4 months - all happy all with tails attatched.
oooops sorry i just read your signature - cant blame kribs then.
we did have a yoyo loach that disappeared about 2& a half months ago & we have never seen him since( despite a thorough search) - or any remains or any change in water parameters that might show a moldy body somewhere. maybe he made a bid for freedom & is now living happily in the thames river (about 10 mins walk away) :)

How do your remaining neons seem, are they OK? I lost a few of mine over the summer when the tank got reeeally hot and my oxygen levels were too low, and I soon learnt that if that unless I actually saw them die, they would seem to 'disappear'. What actually happened was because they are so tiny, as soon as they died the other fish in the tank ate them so quick I never got a chance to see the bodies  . I only figured this out when I scrutinised the tank *really* hard one day after one had disappeared and saw the tiniest bit of blue fin lying on the floor :-( .

So keep an eye on your li'l guys - like I said I believe it was oxygen levels that did for mine - tell tale signs they were suffering were swimming at an angle, hanging near the surface of the water, heavy breathing, and losing colour, especially in the blue part of their bodies.

But just so you don't hold a funeral yet - I did lose a neon once for a week and then he turned up happy as larry  - so don't give up hope just yet!

yes, same thing with my convict. Seemingly dead until a few days later, they just act like that sometimes. Now up and crazy making most of his habitat. :D

Hey GuppyMonkey
I really don't have any advice but noticed you're from S. Glens Falls- I am from Southern Saratoga...I was very surprised to see someone so close considering so many are from England and elsewhere in Europe...
Do you have good lfs up there? I some good ones down here, but I'm growing bored with them...

Wow! I didn't think there was anyone else from the area. I always head down to the saratoga area for fish. Up here the pet stores are terrible, all the fish I looked at were in bad tanks and probably would have brought a ton of diseases to my tank. i usually go to petsmart. Are there any other good stores in the saratoga area? I haven't had a chance to check around that much.

I still haven't found the missing neon. I took all of my ornaments out of the tank and can't find it. The 4 neons I have left seem to be in good shape. I keep the temperature in my tank at about 78 degrees and I haven't noticed anything wrong with the water parameters yet. I think my neon took a vacation to Borneo or something. I am going to get more tonite I think so the ones I have left aren't lonely!

WEll I know my neons didn't go in the filter the cover was on it. And they disapeared one at a time over 2 weeks. I just wish that I could have seen it.

I only have 2 jacks dimpseys but they are more than enough to eat neons

The closest place for you to get to (which would still, probably, be a treck) is Eddie's. It's on Rt. 9 just south of Clifton Park. You could take the Northway (87) south to Clifton Park/Halfmoon and head south on 9 (about 10-15 minutes). It is one of my favorite fs- they just relocated last week and expanded! That is the only one that I can think of that would be relatively 'close' to you....
