About a year ago or so I bought some Ambulia and put it in my 75g tank. It was absolutely gorgeous. The next morning I only had one tiny sprig left. Seemed an awful lot for the tank inhabitants to have eaten in just one night, but I took that tiny sprig and moved it into another tank. It quickly grew and grew, shot out runners and before long I had an ambulia forest. I loved it.
Fast forward that year... Was getting ready to trim it and transplant some to another tank, but when I got home from work yesterday to find one completely intact "tree" on either end of the "forest"... with nothing in between. It's just gone again. No stems poking out of the substrate as proof there was something there, it's just gone.
The only plausible explanation is that it was eaten. But why would the fish not touch it for a year then devour almost all of it overnight? Why would they leave two stems completely intact? Is there another possible explanation?
