my sand is always covered in dirt and excretes. each week i take 15% of the water and clear it but by the next morning it is back. the filter dosen't suck it up either. it makes the tank look ugly. does anyone have any ideas of how to get rid of the dirts and excretes.

I must admit I use a gravel vacuum thats works by siphoning the water out, hold far enough up not to suck the sand up and move it around, sucks all the waste up no problems.

What kind of filter are you using? I always go over kill on my filter. Mine is supposed to be used on a 30 Gal, & I have rarely have stuff on the bottom.

I have 2 sand based tanks which suffer from a similar problem. I haven't as yet found the perfect solution and so as you I do a small hoover job every week to keep down unsightly waste products.

Have tried to over filtrate - by using additional filter systems but this only helps mildly.

same problem. i hav just discoverd that an air pump works a treat. it keeps the water moving so the dirt can't settle and is sucked into the filter. however these are noisy and i want a quiet peaceful tank.
