I feed him frozen blood worms but can I try the blood worms that come in the can like flake food. Not sure what they are called.

Yep, that's the stuff. It's not as nutrious or something you should feed as a staple but they'll eat it.

Are you talking about a Senegalese Bichir, who are often nick named Dinosaur eels? If so then they are unlikely to eat that as it tends to float and Bichirs aren't great at finding their food even when it is in the bottom so there is not much hope when it floats, it is also not a very good diet. I would feed small fish Bloodworms but as they grow most other frozen and live foods are best. :)

Kay blood worm for youngsters, small prawns and small feeder fish for immature adults, and big prawns and big feeders for mature adults.

Oh PS is dinosaur eel american specific? never encountered this name in britain....

yah but i would have frozen foods onece or twice a week and flake food should be the main diet as flake is more balanced
Unless you actually have a idea of what you are talking about then please stop giving out such crap advice!!!!!

Bichirs will not and should not eat flakes, they are predatory fish that require a high protein diet to remain healthy, small bichirs can be fed frozen bloodworms but they should be moved onto meatier foods such as fish, prawns (shrimp) mussels, cockles and pellets for carnivorous fish as soon as they are big enough to manage them.

Information on Polypterus senegalus here http://fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=34889

On top of the above, flake food is also lacking some essential nutrients by the way it is heated and compressed into flake format so it's not really a healthy food for any carnivorous fish. I've seen Dinosaur Eel given to different species of Bichir so it's hard to pin down what one he means. Also, you can sink the freeze dried stuff by weighing it down or sticking it on a stick and putting it in front of the fish. I do that with my frogs when I feed them frreeze dried food.

Apparently birchirs require a high calcium content in their diet to maintain healthy scales, so food such as shrimp or prawns is supposedly good for them (complete with shells)...........Can anyone clarify if this is true?

Ive never heard or read that but as with all fish you should try to give as much of a balanced diet as possible. In the wild bichirs diets are mainly made up of large aquatic insects, frogs and other amphibians, crustaceans and small fish.
