Hello,

I've been involved in a few threads on the forum regarding repair of fluorescent lighting / replacement of failed ballasts.

In response to a couple of posts regarding "too bright lights" etc. I've had a quick look at current electronic dimmable ballasts.. and what would be entailed to use these.

I've only looked at those manufactured by Tridonic for now. Other manufacturers will have similar versions. I have no connection with Tridonic in any way whatsoever.

I've had a look at one ballast family. Links follow for the datasheets:

For T5 tubes:

For T8 tubes:

For all other Tridonic dimmable ballasts:

PREREQUISITES:

These ballasts must be earthed for correct operation.
No external starter is used or required.
Your tube sockets must be wired as 2 wires per socket. (i.e. not wired with 1 wire per socket for a cold cathode ballast).

Dimming function:

Please see the following datasheet extract:

.View attachment 68585

The dimming function can be used from a simple push to make switch..

Something like: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item5650ae2c59

Other ballasts in the range can also be operated digitally... It would be relatively simple to control these with the use of a microcontroller (PICs rule!)... a simple additional mod to this would be with the use of (wireless) remote control...

I foresee yet another project to add to the "getroundtoit" list...

Is this sort of thing of any interest??
