Hi Guys,

After a bit of advice please: My (Labidochromis sp) – “Hongi” gave birth to 7 fry (first attempt) about two weeks ago (I didn’t even know she was holding so a bit of a surprise). Infact she was currently recuperating in my community tank (I didn’t have anywhere else at the time) after being attacked in my Malawi tank so the fry are at the moment in a tank not ideal for them however I have now purchased a separate tank for them and just need to catch the little buggers.

My problem is, I have just noticed that my female Pseudotropheus demason is also carrying only because she spat them out and then they all flew back in as I guess the other Malawi’s spooked them. I can temporary put her in the separate tank for her to release them but obviously this was for the Hongi fry so my question is: Can both fry live side by side in the same tank for a limited time and if so how long as its only a very small tank? This has all come at a really bad time as the house is currently on the market.

Thanks,

Jive

I don't think any typical fishkeeper can really expect to raise all the fry from a typical mbuna setup and there is no obligation to raise them. If you don't have the space, consider introducing a predator or using the fry as feeders for something else.

I dont see a problem as long as their not staying there for ever, then the demasoni will get snippy towards your yellers :grr:

when you run into trouble is trying to sell off juvies and you've got similiar fry in the same tank but thankfully you have BLUES & YELLOW! how easy!

Just think about how you want to proceed in the future, do you want to keep every fry thats spawn or like stated above, do you mind using live food for a larger fish.

many convict owners end up this way, nothing like breeding your own feeders!
