Can someone please recommend a digital thermometer, there are so many out there I would be glad of any recommendations, thanks

I use high/low water temp alarm digital thermometers.
I like the General IP67 In/Out Thermometer because it is small, magnetic and has a wonderfully long 10-foot sensor cable. I have several of these.
I also have eSynic (2 pack) LCD High/Low Hygrometer Thermometers. I have six of these.
Edit: I see the General IP67 now goes by No. AQ150.

I've had this one for over 2 years. The only problem is that it reads off the sensor on the back attached to the aquarium glass, not a sensor that's put into the water like the one @Archerfish recommends. I've noticed it has around a 1 to 0.5°C chance of being off the actual temperature. Battery life is usually every 5-6 months for me also. Personally, a classic glass thermometer or a food thermometer is the way to go for me. I just use this one as another backup. Hope you find what you are looking for :)

@Cato asked about digital but I agree, a cheap, floating thermometer can be very accurate. That's what I found about twenty years ago, @MattW3344, when I was asked to do a thermometer product review for a magazine. I privately purchased the products (I was reimbursed) so as not to get 'juiced samples' from the manufacturers. I compared them to a scientific thermometer I used in my chemistry classes and was stunned to find the 'chepo' I bought at a dollar store was amazingly accurate. In fact, it was more accurate than many of the high dollar thermometers. The only downside to the floater is it can be difficult to read, and in my case, doesn't have the high and low alarm.

Personally I've never used digital. I use a stick-on on the outside of the tank and a glass tube floating thermometer. Not saying anything against digital; just that I've never seen the need or advantage.

I decided to buy one with a probe to try , does it matter how deep into the tank it is put, I have a Jewel 120 Lido.
Thanks.

it shouldn't make any difference where the probe is located as long as it's in the water.

When I need precise temp. control I use a controller. This decides when to send power to the thermometer(s). I t displays the tank temp and allows me to change the temp settings. The controller prevents a heater mishap where the heater gets stuck full on. Although I am measuing mostly in F, my controllers work in C. This gives me a range in F because of the difference in the two scales.

I set the thermometer temp 1 dg C higher than the controller is set to. This way if the controller gets stuck on the thermometer temp setting insures the heat should not get any higher. The digital controller, once set, displays the water temp.

But, being a belt and suspenders type of guy, I also have a suction cup thermometer on the tank as well.

I use the Azoo Micro Controller good for up to 1,000w of heaters.
