I got 2 new superveil tail marble angels today, and I added them to my fishless 29gal to make sure they are disease free.....it is a bare bottom tank, and after I released them from the bags...I noticed several little round silvery things in the bottom of the tank......I didn't know what it was...and just figured it was in the tank the fish came out of at the fish store......well about 3 hrs later, I was looking at them again....and kinda looked up and noticed that the thermometer had busted, and those round metal things were out of it....it is the kind that is glass and has a suction cup and sticks to the inside of the tank......is this mercury?
If not what is it and will it harm the fish....do I need to move the fish out of that tank?
The fish are already stressed, the LFS just got the shipment in yesterday evening, and they had another move today when I brought them home, so I can't tell of any effects it has had on them.
Please anyone that knows anything about this reply....
TIA

I was reading a post while ago and CM said that as long as you cleaned up what came out it wouldnt hurt nothing I think your fish will be fine are they acting funny I will look it up on the web for you and get back to you on this matter they are someone one I know who is a real good vet I will ask her I will pm you as soon as I find out ok try not to worry ok.

mm kay i think they only make alcahol thermomiters now as kids kept chewing up the murcurary ones and drinking the mercury back in the 60's and 70's people seemed to think that it was ok to drink heavy metals to some extent i think they where right but anyways they dont make the mercury ones anymore or at least they shouldnt.

jam is right.

no more mercury thermometers. they are colored alcohol these days. if the contest spilled out I would just collect the balls form thebottom of the tank and do a 50% water change. there is not much alcohol in those and depending on tank size the result would be minimal. as to the overall effect it had...

I have no knowledge on this, but it makes me want to yank my glass thermometer out of the tank
I hope your fishies still do fine though  but it certainly sounds like mercury, put a few squirts of whatever heavy metal stuff you use for your water treatments in there as a precaution (just a suggestion)

Ok, no worry about the mercury then
I didn't know alcohol would bead up like that

I have posted a pic of the thermometer

HERE

It wasn't in liquid form...it was like tiny little steel balls...none of the red stuff escaped...just about 10 little balls, but it had broke about 3 hrs before I noticed it, ...I think.

Thanks guys......
angels seem to be getting a bit more relaxed now....they were really stressed out there for the first few hours.
