Alright I started up my 37 gallon tank and it is up and running. I am using crushed coral for the substrate along with about 10 plants so far. The only thing I needed to buy was a test kit. I was at petco today and I ended up buying the API freshwater Master test Kit. Is this the right kit? Also when should I start testing my water and which test should I start with? Thanks.

yes you bought the right one, most people here use the API freshwater master test kit. if you are in a cycle you test your water everyday starting with ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte, pH, ect.

IMO API is inaccurate, mass produced garbage. Salifert is the best. Seachem is excellent as many if not all of their kits come with reference samples so you can test their accuracy.
