Diatoms

I have some brown stuff on top of my substrate(I have fine sand). I don't know what it is.

Sounds like it, very common in newer set ups (mines full of it)...There are certain inverts/fish that can help tackle it but generally people try to avoid buying living things for a job rather then to care for and enjoy just give everything a good scrub and it'll come off.

Probably diatoms and they are harmless but common in virtually every new tank set up. They go away on their own with time and increasing the amount of light can reduce them. Conversely it can also increase the algae if you over do it.
