I have searched uk google and cant find a shop that sells them. Are they worth having to run along with my external filter? I heard they make the water crystal clear.

Ive never seen them for sale in the UK either, in the US they use them a lot, they normally only run them for short periods of maybe a few hours at a time, a lot of people with planted tanks use them to clear water after major replantings etc when they may disturb the substrate and cloud the water, but i dont think you run them all the time.

They certainly have been sold in the UK. The first time I saw one was at my LFS in the mid 1960's.

As zig says, they are not a thing you run all the time. They actually clog up quite quickly if the tank water is not aready filtered by another mechanical filter.

There the same size as an normal canister type external filter. As was mentioned earlier they are not your primary filter, they are used as a water polisher or an aid for when your trying to get rid of a parasitic infection.
