Hi

my guppies are dropping like flies i have found yet another victim floating in my tank. Everyone was ok this morning at feeding time i fed them freeze dried Tubefix worms. Then i found him later on when i come back from work, i was only out for two hours!!!

He hasn't lost any colour, just keeps head banging the glass!!! i cant see any usual spots or fungus, all fins look normal.

Yet all my water chemistry is normal.

So whats wrong with him.

(had this problem once before & they had mouth fungus) but he doesn't show signs of this.

Oh his gills look swollen

Oh his gills look swollen

Are his gills redder than normal?? Is he scratching at the gill area??

It could be a lack of oxygen or gill flukes, but I suggest this guardedly. The head banging has me puzzled.

Could it be he is scratching the side of his head (the gill area) and not actually "banging" it??

Update i have a case of Flexibacter (mouth fungus) i have just added Melafix to the tank now.

Is their anything else i can do to resolve the situation, i really dont want to lose my whole stock like last time. I have 3 pregnant guppies in the same tank.

I have salt in the tank already.

Water conditions are fine though, only thing i've done different is notched the temp upto 27'C would it h

you had better get you some maracyn and treat that fish that melafix is for sores and ripped fins this is my output on melafix I wouldnt use that stuff on nothing I sure think that is what killed a friend of mines betta but that is just me but it doesnt work for nothing like u need. I am sorry your fish are dying it always hurts me real bad when that happens

Melafix worked fine on my Bettas ripped fins but I would use it for any kind of fungal infection, I would use a proper medication, Melafix is only a 'herbal' type remedy.

mouth fungus isn't actually a fungal infection but bacterial that looks like a fungus.

Melafix is antibacterial so this should help. personaly I'm a big fan of melafix for repairing damaged fins/sores/abrasions etc. but it might not be as good as some other products at combating bacterial infections....

Melafix can cause a little bubbling/foam at the surface from the return in my experience, but if this is ecessive then I'd check the doseage you gave :/

I guess i slipped on the dosage  the instructions for Melfix is based on US Gallons.
So how much do you use in a :-

20 litre tank and 43 litre tank?

Everyone else looks ok so far so good.

My nitrate level was on the high side 50mg to 75mg/litre, i'm abit :*) over it i should know better.

Cheers for all your help

Personally I prefer Maracyn-Two as opposed to Melafix (I've read too many stories of Melafix doing damage to fish) Maracyn-Two is a broad spectrum non-toxic antibiotic and we have had some good results when we treated our tank with it, it healed up the sick Gouramies without hurting any of the other fish.

Don.

p.s. 1 US gal = 3.78 liters.
