Derranged Dp!

hey all i have a DP, missis's choice for her and kids 20GAL.
its a 99p short of a £1!!!! i mean really bonkers!!

so after buying it about a month ago! as soon as it was placed in the tank it started acting like it was a dolphin!! i thought poor blighter its stressed!! so strictly toldkids no peeking through the tank for a few days keep the light off and let mummy or daddy feed it.

so here's its behaviour in a nutshell.

when introduced went straght to the bottom looked around (thought good ok) then 10 mins later saw it skimming the under surface in the filter current, then i was hearing plip plop thought ok wierd whats that? went to tank and the bliter was hopping in and out of the filter water current (good job the tank has a tight lid eh) thought oh no its stressed and looking for a way out hence no lights no gawping me or mum feed (just incase it made a great escape) but it didnt and hasnt stopped it, it does it regular, and also does twists and turns upside down through the filter water current!! stops for an hour (to rest) feed look about the bottom of tank then back to it. its hillarious, when you sitting in the kitchen all you can hear is plip plop plip plop i heads out at the soft part of the current lands right in the strong part gets blown across the tank and does twists and turns as its going backwards and heads up to do it over and over again, when its see's me or the kids etc with the yellow food tray of bloodworm, chopped cockels, stops heads over out of the current up to the surface with beak out of water and hovers there till food is put in around its beak. i nearly had it attached to my finger as i thought i maby able to hand feed like i do with my MBU puffer PIKA but as you lower you hand it jumps at your finger like nothing ive seen before.

the kids are somewhat disapointed they cant feed this DP normally as its too risky youve really got to time it to open the lid hatch or it'll be out in a second so mum watches them.

anyone else had a wierdo of a puffer???

Have you got much plants or hidy holes?

Sounds awesome to be honest. I would love to have DP (planning on getting them) with that personality.

Sounds too me that although they are strong swimmers for their size the current still might be too strong!
and what else do you have in the tank?

How odd - my puffer does nothing like this! Though it sounds amusing, hope (s)he is ok!

just the DP's i have had three in there its well planted and is like an obstical course in there with nooks and cranny to explore through jura coral stone, (that stuff pushes up PH level BTW, so have to lower ph every week with a buffer treatment), at the monment their in my LFS being looked after i have a sick MBU thats in quarentine and that tank is in use for that.

Seems abit odd but i had2 DPsjust like that!!

To be honest, i think the whole lot of the bloomin species a psychotically derranged! I had a neighbour turn up with two emciated DPs and say "you have fish tanks... here please take these so i dont have to kill them!".

My ex fell in love with them <.< they were only going to stay one night as an emergency, they were never suitable! The only tank they could go in was my Duo Deep 250L with my discus, leaf fish, panchax, hatchets, little clown loach etc...

I mean... this was my 'middle ground' tank for fish i wasnt sure were going to fit in with a shoal yet due to size etc... and my discus were a good 6-7" and between them and the rest, they should by rights have eaten the dwarf puffers!! Did they??

Not likely!! Had to remove the dwarf puffers because they nearly killed my discus overnight!! Chasing and biting them!! And my poor leaf fish has never been the same again! He now only eats flake, wont touch feeder shrimps or anything frozen or alive!!

Ended up emptying the tank (moved the fish to where they were going to go) and the two dwarf puffers had 250L tank to themselves with the biggest Classic Eheim on it (aimed at 600L tanks) and they spent the whole time playing in the immense flow from the spraybar.... if i turned it down... they just rolled about on the bottom of the tank like dustballs looking miserable!! They loved the flow (and so did the discus before anyone says the flow would have been too high for them as well).

I think the only observation other than the one that they are ALL psychotically derranged... is that they do like to be in groups!

Read the replies... if anything is making the DP and now maybe MBU unhappy.. its the water!!

The pH getting buffered up and up and up then suddenly dropped down with a medication then buffered up and up and up by the rocks and then suddenly dropped with the medication.... then buffered up and up and...you see where im going?

I really try and discourage people buying pH buffers as its a dangerous game to play and you are risking pH shock in the fish or at least discomfort!

Removing the rocks is really a good plan, plenty of rock out there that doesnt buffer the water...

no the jura was removed and new water put in it, ive authorised the LFS to sell the DP's, and put the credit into the LFS tank rental rate for this week. PIKA needs allot of TLC and cant see her rocovering anytime soon.
