Lights about 8 hours a day with twilight periodic you can.

I don't bother with egg crate as it traps sand that can't be well sifted, make sure your rocks firmly placed on the bottom and you will be fine, if your worried about scratches you can cut a piece of Perspex to fit the bottom of the tank and go from there.

I agree 100% on the egg-crate - I used it when I first built my marine tank, but a year later was getting rising NO3 despite proper water change regime and normal feeding and stocking. LFS said problem most likely sand bed (1.5") and especially if I had crate... One complete strip-down and re-build without crate (and 0.5" sand) later, and my tank is a happy place :). I did also consider the sheet of perspex option, but figured something could go wrong, e.g. a few grains of sand under the perspex causing extreme point pressure and a cracked tank bottom...
