Fish Crazy
Yesterday afternoon my family and I were visiting some friends of ours when my 7 yr. old daughter found a baby toad and asked me if she could have it, of coarse I said yes. Making a long story short---my daughter went outside this morning to check on him in his little habitat and he was dead, for about 1/2 hr. she just balled uncontrollably but is doing fine now or that's what my wife told me anyways. I have learned at least 1 big lesson if not 2---#1 Stop thinking like a child even when you are crazy about animals and #2 Learn to say no even if it may hurt your children for the moment, it'll be better in the end. I don't know if my daughter learned from this experience about taking wild animals out of their habitat and trying to keep them but hopefully she did! Last night I tried my best after telling she could have the toad that it would be so much better for him if he could be with his brothers and sisters, and that he'd be lonely without them. I even told her that he may die but she had here heart set on keeping him, and I figured as sad as it may be a lesson learned for her if he did die after bringing him home. Of coarse I figured the opposite, I figure he'd survive years but unfortunately he didn't. I love animals and I probably should have released him before bringing him home but I messed up and now realize from experience that hopefully something like this will never happen again. We are planning on a small burial ceremony tonight after work for the toad. I've learned small creatures from the wild are certainly not meant for young children or their parents!!!
