Woke up this morning to find our 5 year old pangasias dead in the bottom of the tank :-( Yesterday I had thought his eyes looked a little cloudy but he was behaving normally so I didn't give it much thought. No idea what caused the death therefore.

Now I am a bit worried about the other one (just under 2 years old) as I don't want him to get lonely but I don't want to get another pangasias either (since I learned all about their potential sizes etc).

Our tank is pretty barren as we are just starting to stock up and so I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for good tankmates for the remaining pengasias - something of decent but not gargantuan size...

Unfortunately the catfish is unlikely to school with a fish of another species and i cant think of any catfish apart from other members of the Pangasius that even look remotely like them, im afraid your only options could be to either return the lone pangasius too a store or buy another one or two to keep it company. You could try a large peaceful schooling fish like bala sharks but i wouldnt be too optimistic as to whether it would work.

Oh, this is such a dilema. I love the pangasias so much, they really are the best fish ever, and they used to be so happy together. The other one already seems unsettled but I don't have an LFS I can take it to easily at the moment (no car and 9 months pregnant and the one over the road wouldn't take it) so if I do return it it will have to wait a while anyway. They do sell them in the store over the road though, but I said we would not get more because of the possible size issues...now is not a good time for me to be making decisions!
