hiya kevin

if you've got any dead fish in the tank you do need to remove them before they pollute the tank

I had a cardinal tetra go missing about 2 weeks ago and I have not been able to find, not at the time or recently when I totally re-arranged the tank. It doesn't smell and my levels are ok.

Yes, I've had that happen too, cheese, A zebra danio went missing and I never found it :(
