Hi there,

I found my lovely Betta had died today. I have not noticed any aggression in the tank at all, but before I replace him can I please check that none of the following are likely to harass a male Betta?

Cardinal Tetras
Male Guppies
Male Swordtail
Panda Corys
Small Pleco

Thanks,

Mark

Male guppies are a little aggressive, though most of the time they will only kill if you had say 10 guppies to 1 betta, though again in saying that, im sure 3 or 4 to 1 could also kill over a wile,

have a look at your other fish, the ones also hurt would be the the ones attacking,

None of your listed fish should cause any problem for an adult betta. Some bettas are reputed to be aggressive toward male fancy guppies but not the other way around. DarkPride, please get a clue about guppies. I have kept them for well over 50 years and never seen them attack anything, ever. You may have some knowledge about Betta splendens but are clueless about guppies, at least as it is reflected in your statement.

Donk, many people will tell you that you can't keep bettas with fancy guppies but they are worried about the betta possibly attacking the guppies, not the other way around.

This guy lives in this nice 45 gallon breeding colony tank full of these fish. He has been there for well over 2 years and is completely unharmed.

Let's try to get back to reality please.

Thank you Oldman, I thought it odd that guppies would be a problem as they seem so peaceful. The tank concerned now has a couple of docile angels that I have moved over from a tank where they were getting picked up my a couple of quite aggressive angels.

I would like to add either a male dwarf gourami but the tank had iridovirus 4 months ago (I trust it has gone now as I do 90% water changes most weeks), or another male betta but am wary of a betta with the angels. What do you think?

How many Cardinals do you have? Tetra's can be nippy if kept in small numbers if they feel threatened.

Are you sure your Betta was killed? did he have any signs of injury's? or did you just find him dead one morning?

Could have been old age.

About 10-12 Cardinals, shortly after the Betta died a couple of the tetras and some guppies died too. The Betta had some missing fins. I think that I had overstocked the tank which caused a fight, although it seemed peaceful to me, some lessons you learn the hard way.....

I would check your water, having more then one fish die at a time would indicate to me that there is something wrong with the water not the other fish.

First thing I did - ammonia, nitrites and nitrates all zero!

I really don't know what to suggest. Seems like you covered everything. How old was he? Are you sure it couldn't have just been old age as Livewire suggested?

I think there was stress due to overcrowding that lead to some of the fish fighting, there were some other casualties too, covered in another thread! It could have been old age, though, but then that doesn't explain the other deaths.

Not trying to debunk your ideas on guppies, but I do have a curious question? Is there a such thing as psycho guppies? Or was I just lucky? I had 2 males and 3-4 females, and they would roll around the tank in groups and bully my swordtails and platys. Have you ever seen this? (never seen em kill though)

I used to have a group of fry that would go around and all of a sudden, chase after one of my mollies.
