Hi can anyone help? I've just bought a juvenile Datnioides and I'm wondering about it's colouration. It's bars are faded and some look broken; does the fish colour up as it matures? Are the bars like this through stress as all the fish in the shop looked like this. The fish is in a tank with good cover and seems otherwise healthy and is feeding ok.

hi, sometimes when stressed the bar colours will fade, the black will go almost grey in colour, if they are kept in cramp conditions, being bullied, poor water quality all will cause stress to the fish.
what size tank is it in and what are its tank mates, filter and tank stats, like ph ammonia nitrites etc.

Dave

Hi Dave.
the tank stats are spot on and the size is 27x16x18. This is my growing on tank, it will be eventually going into a 7ftx2ftx2ft. It's tank mates are two chaca bakanensis (not fully grown), hujeta gar ( a little one) and some small community fish. The fish was only delivered to the store (from another store; so it was acclimatized to neutral ph over a period of a fortnight or more) the day before I bought it. W|ithin an half hour of putting it into my tank it was out hunting the small fish and so far is feeding well. Probably the stress of all the moving has affected it's colouration and all being well it will be looking it's best in a few days. What do you think?

Dats can be unstable even when in the best of conditions, they stress out very easily and getting their true colours out just takes time for them to settle down and adjust to their new enviroment. It took mine a few months before they were stable pretty much constantly and even now they have days where they look really washed out

Spot on!
Datnoids can take weeks or even years to get completely stable. Even in perfect conditions.
Some times you get lucky and get specimens that are always stable. Other times not so much.
Also, it seems that certain types of Dats will be more stable than others. While ST are almost always stable, NGT and AT tend to be more unstable.

We've had a silver Dat (polota) for nine months and it's grown well and is now up to 5inch. I would agree about the bars being stable because it's always looked really good, that;s why I was concerned about this other Dat. Thanks for all the advice, it's been really helpful.
