Hey guys, I have a question about Danios. Well, 2 actually. First of all, what topic should posts about danios go? I wasn't really sure so I put it here. Secondly, how do you breed them? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Should be kept in groups of x 6 or more. You can tell the difference in sex as the females are rounder bodied and have dull cream stripes while the males are more slender and have yellow stripes. Thy will probably breed anyway but you can encourage this by feeding a varied diet and doing a largish water change with the water you replace cooler than usual as this stimulates the rain in the breeding seasons.

If you have them in a community tank then the fry are unlikely to survive. You will know they are breeding as the males will chase the females manically around the tank and they will dive amongst the plants. They will scatter the eggs in the tank - if you have gravel some will fall between it and hatch out. Eggs should hatch within 24 to 36 hours. When the fry hatch you will notice them sticking to the tank walls - they look like minute glass hairs. At that stage they will still have their yolk sacs and will rely on that for food for the next 24 hours or so. When they have absorbed the yolk sac, they become free swimming and then require feeding on Infusoria or very finely crushed flake.

Great thats good to know!! I will go get more because I only have 3. I used to have 4, but one of them disappeared. I think he may have died and fell under a decoration or something because I can't find him!! Also, about the big water change. I recently did a 25% water change, and the water was colder than usual. The next day or so, my fish had a case of Ich. When we went to the pet store to get medicine (I lost mine :) the man there said that doing a water change with cold water causes Ich. Should I still do it to promote breeding? Lastly, When the babies are still in their yoke sacs, will the community fish eat them? Thanks again!

It's quite hard to sex danios when getting them from the lfs as usually they are underfed so quite hard to determine, males tend to have thinner bands of yellow than the females too if you can't see much difference in roundness.

Try adding some glass beads like some people use for flower arranging as this will help give a deeper crevice for the eggs to fall into.

Cooler water shouldnt be a problem - the water needs to be a little cooler than the usual temp not cold water. The fry have the yolk sacs attatched to them they are not inside them - these are gradually absorbed by them and then they need feeding.

All community fish will eat them including your adult danios which is why if you want to keep any you should remove the adults to another fully cycled tank and after they have spawned remove the adult fish back into the main tank.

Hi Unknown10101 :)

I'm going to move your thread over to the "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids" section. Good luck breeding them. :)

Thanks! I couldn't figure out where this post should go!! Also, Gilli, about moving all the adults to the main tank, could I simply move the 3 danios into a smaller, 2.5 gallon tank and then let them spawn there? I don't really have another cycled tank, just small small 2.5 and 1 gallon tanks.

As long as the tank is cycled then no problem! :good:
