I recently purchased 7 (small) danios and rather than putting them straight into my occupied 24gal tank I thought it best to quarantine them in my smaller 4.5 tank first. I have only since realised that 10gals plus is advised..

I am keen to get them settled with the rest of 'the family' but am a bit dubious since the only long finned danio died about a week after I got them and I worry that it was the others nipping at his fins.. (could have just been ill when I got him tho :dunno: ) The tank they will be moving to only has short (ish) finned fish in it tho one of the shubunkins has mid length fins which could be an easy target.

The rest of the danios seem fine and very active but do have the odd little scrap (pecking order thing?).. is this likely to be because of the small tank? No injuries tho.

Am I fretting over nothing? Can you give me some advice on danio behaviour? Are they likely to 'chill out' in the bigger tank rather than turn on the shubunkin? :/

firstly danios are not the ideal tank mates for goldfish of any kind.
secondly yes a larger tank will reduce the aggression.
danio do go through a pecking order, to find the alpha fish.

Danios won't go with goldfish, period. Most fish can't go with gold fish because of the major waste production of gold fish.

I kept zebra and leopard danios with goldfish for years when I was a kid. They were suggested as good tropicals for a coldwater tank as they have a wider temperature range than most. Not ideal but never had any problems.

But for that I dont suppose I would ever have got into danios.

Black widow tetras are not such a good idea with goldfish though as they eat thier fins when the mode takes them. Savage little B@"£$%. (they were IIRC also suggested as "coldwater tropicals"
