danios - is 26 degrees to warm for them? if se, what happens if the water is too warm? whould I cool it down?

They'll do just fine in 26, but it's a little warm. Warmer water tends to speed up their metabolism, and provides a better breeding ground for bacteria - both good and bad. Warmer water also absorbs less oxygen.

firstly it depends on what species of danio you have.

I'm takeing it that you are refering to Zebra danios,
which like a range of 18-24c / 64-75f.
ZD's are sub-tropical and not Tropical fish.

I've got some zebra danios in a tank at 25 degree's and they zip about like mad. So i wouldn't imagine 26 degrees being a problem.

You need to remember that alot of the fish information relates to the fish in its natural wild habbit. However most people's fish have been born and raised with in an aquarium and therefore probably quite happy at tropical temperatures.

I have recently turned down my temperature and would support the above comment.

However they will live ok for a while in temperatures up to mid 80's. Main risk is them getting dropsy due to the faster metabolic rate and dropsy causing pathogens breeding faster.

That said when breeding them I will raise the temp to 80-82.

In summer there is little I can do to stop the temperature going to 85 owing to the room being that temperature. Danios are stream fish and this means they live in relatively cool water but can get trapped in drying pools so can withstand the higher temperatures for short periods.
