Danios In Open Tank?

hey, i was in my LFS the other day and seeing all the gorgeous fish they had(and i know, stupid) i bought some fish without looking them up. Among them i bough 5 danios, 3 leopard and 2 zebra. i have them in a small quarantine tank atm and i was planning on putting them in my 20gal tank. BUT it doesnt have a lid. After reading lots about them and now knowing they jump really well, can i risk putting them in a tank with no lid? i could try and out some fine mesh over the top?

its either that or have a serious move around in my tanks?

When i was cycling my tank, i had 5 danios. I lost them all because they had all jumped out without me knowing and died, so i really suggest that you put some mesh E.T.C to stop them jumping, good luck

Danio are crazy jumpoers, you will need that mesh!

Well danios are quite small, so it would have to be mesh with small gaps, good luck

I'd say any hole bigger than 2" they can definitely jump out of.

Get yourself down to your local builders merchants and ask for builders mesh. Its usually no more than £2 a square metre and will do the job your looking it for. Its nice tight mesh. Won't look too nice but its a cheap option until you get sorted. Maybe try adding another danio too as they like to be in groups of 6+. If you have room that is.

Just a note, it may be worth looking into vivarium lids as an easy 'open' alternative.

Forgot to say, floating plants will help prevent fish from leaping out

ive put some fine mesh over the top for now, tied down with some string.
also i cant buy a lid for this tank cause its a B shape with a waterfall hang on back filter, so its a really awkward shape. I am going to try and make one with wire and mesh

my danios have never tried to jump, or even looked like they are thinking about it.... but I do keep the lid on almost all the time.
