I got a long-finned Zebra Danio about 2 weeks ago. She had a pretty big tummy at the time, but I thought that just might have been her shape.

But now her tummy is HUGE. She looks fit to burst! She also seems to be feeling unwell, mainly sitting in one spot, hiding in the plants.

There is also a pink tinge to the rear bottom of her tummy.

I haven't seen any worms and nobody else in the tank seems ill. (6 zebras, 2 mollies, 8 rummy nose tetras)

Is she super full of eggs maybe? If she was, how long till she might lay them??

Or does it sound like she's sick?

Does anyone have any ideas?

thanks for your help.

If she looks like these fish;

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&xhr=t&q=danio+dropsy&cp=8&safe=off&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1280&bih=661&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi

Then she has Dropsy.

as far as I can tell her scales aren't sticking out in that pine-cone way....

just an update.

Well nobody, including me, came up with a cure...

I did alot of online research elsewhere and decided it was probably either constipation or egg impaction.

The remedy for constipation seemed to be to feed the fish peas, but I already feed my fish peas and only one of the danios eats them, and this danio had stopped eating for a week already.

The remedy for egg impaction seemed to be to turn the temperature up (or surgery!) I tried this too... But sadly, she got worse instead of better.

A few days before I turned the temp up her swollen belly got very lumpy on one side and a red spot appeared on her flank (it looked like a scrape or like a scale or two was missing) Then the red patch got bigger and started oozing blood.

I decided to put her out of her misery. It was awful..

But now everybody else in the tank seems happier.... fingers crossed whatever was isn't contagious!

So sorry for your loss. It's so hard to watch one of your fish go downhill.

thanks for your kind thoughts.

it is all a bit much, but everyone else seems fine now. so far so good!

It is all for the best... You certainly wouldn't have wanted to have the problem spread to the others.

Do you have a quarantine/hospital tank? You might want to look around. 10 gallon tanks are actually quite cheap here in the US because they are mass manufactured. A simple air pump and sponge filter would be sufficient to support that tank.

I don't have a hospital tank, but I have been thinking about it.

I did wonder, though, how do you keep it cycled if there aren't fish in it all the time??

I am keeping a sponge filter in my tank, so that it is always ready to go, if I need it. It would be more than enough to handle my 10 gallon tank, but taking it out of my main tank won't be a problem either. You could also just keep the sponge in the filter, just in case. There are a lot of options. One of the other things with hospital tanks is that I believe that water changes need to happen on a daily basis during treatment, but I could be mistaken on that.

thanks for the advice. I don't actually have room in the flat for one more thing right now, but if I ever get a bigger place I will def get a hospital tank!

cheers

I certainly can understand that.
