Hi,

I had 7 danios its now 5... :-(

The fish I found dead, but it had been looking a little peeky for a few days, not sure what it was though.

A second died today, it did have a mark on its head which was bleeding, I was going to treat with a general medication, but alass I was too late. I thought it may be 'hole-in-the-head' disease, but looking at info and pics on the net I'm not too sure.

Another of them has 'red' marks behind its pectoral fins, any idea if this is linked? The first death had no marks such as the last one, or the one with red marks. The fish are all busy racing around and are eating fine, all water parametres are great. could it be they were bad stock? I hope not would be the first from that FS :(

any light on the subject would be nice,

Thanks,

any chance of a pic?
I'm thinking either physical damage that has become infected or
a bacterial ulcer.

hi
we used to have zebra & leopard danios & we loved them but had no luck at all over the space of 2 years we lost all of them to dropsy, they'd start off swimming a bit strangely almost 'wobbling' from side to side but still looking quite happy zipping ( wobbly zipping) around eating etc but eventually over the space of a few months they would die. they were in a mature tank & we had no problems with any other fish, they also were bought from different lfs.i thought it might be some virus or something but have no idea what, i was interested to read in pfk magazine about a year ago though that the editor was having similar problems with danios.......maybe sadly its a case of too much inbreeding & the genes of some of them have become weak. i really dont know. id love to have danios again but are relkuctant to watch gorgeous little fish get sick & die again ( had similar probs with neons in the past)
sorry i cant be of more help. :-(

it is a poor state of affairs now, that we see this kind of problem with many species now. From livebreeders to egg layers, that are bred in captivity. maybe the breeders need to brand out and bring in some new genes from else were, world wide scheme world insure genetic stability. but as we see more and more people breeding to create certain traits in some fish, we see a lot of inbreeding, and the fall in quality of our fish.
But this does happen in nature as well, as I was writing this I thought of those lions that have been cut off from all the others prides, there are only about 50 of them left, and they are much bigger and stronger than any other straine of lion in the world. but because they are SO inbred the intrusion of any virus could cause them to be ALL wiped out.
lol this is such a large topic I think I should stop or I will start compairing the resisent white spot, and velvet to human viruses and antibiaotics

Hopefully my remaining 4 will be ok for now. :-(
