Hi all,

since my move, i have much less available furniture in my (larger) room.

So in order to set up my 15L nano, I figured I could do with a small book case or bedside table.

I purchased This flkat pack book shelf yesterday.

Its assembled and seems fairly solid.

My question is, will it support the 15-20KG of the tank/equipment, or would it need further srengthening?

I could add a base/top to the tank (slightly larger than its foot print) and screw in the shelves permanently, this might make it more stable/rigid.

What do you think? am I over thinking things (i.e. when full of books, what would the weight have been) or is it more sensible?

Cheers.

Screwing the shelfs in permanetly will make it more secure, you could try that then use your judgement on how sturdy it is with a bit more than 20kg on it and if still in doubt then you could make a frame at the rear of the book case and attach it hidden beihnd the back to make it more ridged. I't can be hard to judge as it could hold the weight fine for so long then eventually break under strain as its not been designed and tested for heavy weights.

Cheers,

thats what I'm worried about, it 'should' be fine...

Yes I'll screw in the shelves, give it a plinth base/top, and maybe add some brackets ;P

LOL!

Stick a big bag of potatoes on it. See if it holds

I would have thought that would be fine as standard. These things are tested well above there recommended weight :) I wouldnt think twice about it.

OK Cheers :D

I will take another look when I get back and fill up a bucket to sit on top...

Though i like the idea of doing some woodwork, Its a nice bit of furniture as it is ;P

It should hold as has been said but more likely than not it's some form of pressboard. Don't get it wet. And you shouldn't need to permanently screw the shelves in. I'd be more sure if it was a plywood than that pressboard.

I love how they say self assembly: 1 person required. Isn't that kind of the minimum requirement? I'd really like to see it assemble itself though.

The most important thing is that the stand is level. You could have the strongest stand ever but if one corner is bearing the brunt of most of the weight, that could be a problem. The idea is to have equal psi (pounds per square inch)on all 4 corners.

Cheers :)

Luckily I actually managed to find a flat floor space, and have just bought some wood for top/base and side supports...

now wheres that drill...

Try standing on it, if it holds then its good to go :p
