Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment!! I can't win!

Ok, I have a large Rosy Barb with what looks like a cyst on his side. I've had these fish for 6 months and they haven't shown a single sign of ill health up until now.

They're in a 36" x 12" x 18" thank containing under-gravel filtration with powerhead, a Fluval Plus 3, 100w heater and Growlux SunGlow lighting.

In the tank there are 5 Rosy Barbs, 1 Bala Shark, 1 Sailfin Plec, 2 Black Ruby Barbs, 1 Tiger Barb, 1 Longfin Barb and 4 Checker Barbs.

Everybody else is very active, feeding well and seem very healthy.

I only noticed the lump on the fish last night but this morning it looks like it's burst.

What should I do?

I've put him in a hospital tank as while I was typing my previous post he started swimming upside down.

I don't hold much hope of a recovery for him but I'd like to know a) what caused it, b ) if the cyst bursting has put my other fish at risk, c) if the other fish are likely to get it and d) what I should do if it happens again (god forbid!)

I'd appreciate any advice anybody could offer.

i'm really sorry, i have no idea what u should do :( but i just wanted to say goodluck, i hope nobody else gets it. have u tried reading the section on fish diseases pinned i think it's in the beginners section? it has a little about cysts if i remember correctly. i don't think they're contagious but somebody else might be able to help you. all the best.

Thank you for your post. I've read the information in the Newbie section. I even have this book called 'Handbook of Fish Diseases' by Dieter Untergasser but it's rubbish!!!! It's really hard to follow (it needs more pictures!!!), recommends using all sorts of chemicals that I probably can't even obtain in this country (UK) and it doesn't really have any information on anything I have problems with.

I'm just hoping that somebody using this forum can help.
