I have had my tank for a year now and im a newbie so i havent found out about cycles until after i have put in fish a few days after my tank was set up....dumb move i know :( ....do you think my tank cycled by now? Im going out to buy a testing kit....i only have a ph reading which is 7.5....None of my fish have died either...and i just used something from petco called Organic Waster Eliminator and it says it could spike ammonia levels during the process. Has the process already been done??? I just added a maintinence dose of it....im really in a bad situation...i have 2 corys a Trio of Guppys and a Guppy fry tank which was somewhat recently set up...im so stupid :/ help.

Hey there,

Its ok I am in the same boat as you. I did the same thing but with mollies. I checked the ammo. lvl and it showed up at 0 although it could be any were from 0-.9 :/ Although not to fear, just watch your levels closely and if there is a spike of any sort make sure that you do some water changes around 20%.

I also got this thing from the lps called NITROMAX because they told me to put it in. It also said that it would help with the good bacterial phase, but said nothing about spiking it. Also said that it reduces the ammonium. Although using no meds is the best bet. Its up to you because i know some dont approve HTH

the chemical additives aren't really needed. Just a source of bacteria which since both of you are already on your way it seems you have I'd quit foolin with the chemicals and let things take their course.

Deepseafishin unless you've been doing something terribly wrong that has been killing your bacteria your tank should be well cycled after a year. However you def want to pickup a master test kit to see exactly what your water is up to. After that much time you may have a low KH and not know it and be on the verge of something called old tank syndrome.

DeepSea,

Did you said that you have had your fishtank sitting with water in it for a year, your you had the tank for a year and just set it up?

Your tank has been up for a year?? It is most certainly cycled by now, cycling usually doesn't take longer then 6 weeks. And your PH is fine.

Amen.
