in the near future i'm going to start up a new tank- when i'm doing my fishless cycling can i have live plants in the tank? will adding pure ammonia hurt them?

Have done this many times now and NO it will not hurt the plants....assuming that you dont have very delicate plants. Have had the ammonia up to 8ppm with swords, ludwigia, val and cabomba with no casualties. HTH

Go ahead and plant while you do the fishless cycle - give you some one on one time with the greens before the fish show up.
