Hi I put my live rock in yesterday

I have the powerheads going but unfortunately as some of you will have read on my previous thread my pump has packed in and wont get the new one untill tomorrow  so no skimmer

Was just wondering how often i need to do water changes while it is cycling?
once a week? twice a week etc?

Cheers

No skimmer will be no issue whilst cycling mine is producing very llittle skimate at the moment.

I would not change any water until you finish your cycle then do a 25 - 30% change and away you co with the CUC

Yep agree with Morri, no water change during the cycle - can't remember how big your tank is but if managable, do a 50% water change at the end of the cycle, if not managable because your tank is too large, go for the largest water change you can manage

be managable if i used tap water but i did that to fill it up and really only want to use ro water from now on. I got two large water containers hold 25litres each thats as much ro water as i can manage.

lol not much dear
Well tank is 720 litres and my containers amount to 50 litres

oh yes, how could i have forgotten! I have a 400 litre and can't do large water changes either - the biggest I have done is 50 litres. As long as water stats are fine then there is no need to do large water changes, many people dont do any water changes for months (on big tanks), just top ups and add calcium, mag etc as and when required. i used to do a 25% water change on my nano weekly, but I can honestly say have only done one water change since it was set up in the summer

I only do water changes when i need to fill my qt tank

hehe, i also only have 2-5 gallon buckets for a 90 gallon tank so anything i change is about 11%.

if you have a RO unit, I'm assuming you dont, you can empty out how much you want and just fill it back up. It will take awhile, but you can do it

I dont have a Ro unit but as i can get 25litres of it from lfs for £2 dont really see the point in buying one!
What are your thoughts on this; did my levels after 24hrs my amonia was 0.5 my nitrite was 0 my nitrate was 0? I thought my ammonia would have been higher? The rock was sent over night so most of the stuff was dead when it arrived but i thought that would only serve to put the ammonia higher? This thing about not placing live rock onto the sand? Where am i suppose to put it? I have some ocean rock i could put that on the bottom and put the live rock on top of that

Patience grass hopper!!!! I would expect to see at least a small cycle

Live rock should go on the glass bottom or on egg crate with sand around it
