I have an eheim external filter that i will use for quarantining new or sick fish. How would i go about cycling the pads for it with leaving it set up intill i want fish.

I was thinking about doing this - take the pads for the filter and place them in the live rock in the display tank untill it cycles. Add one or two mollys for ammonia ect then once the tank has gone through the high ammonia stage and settled, take enough water out of the display tank, put it in my Q tank and take the filter pads from the LR, put them in the filter and get my marines fish and put them in the Q tank. Then keep them in there for a week or two.

Does that sound like a good plan, would it work ?

Well it would work, but why not just do an accellerated fishless cycle? Grab a few bits of LR rubble, and put them in the filter with the pads. Add a little ammonia to the QT tank and run the filter off that. That way you seed the filter with some bacteria from the LR rubble, shouldn't take too long to get it going.

The reason why i wanted to do it like that was so i would only have to cycle one tank. And also, once the display tank is ready for fish, i can easily just set up the tank with water from the display. So if you say it does work then ill do it.
