Thanks LMO
so when you cycle the tank, you do it when the tank is new?, so use no fish and just plants? or is this somthing that happens all the time?- sorry but really want to get this clear in my head and am unsure.
Ive taken over a tank from the previous occupier of my house. The tank had been badly neglected but still had 5 healthy fish in, these were - 1 clown loach, 2 silver sharks, 1 tetra, 1 barb. With the excitment of becoming a fish owner, I went out bought a book, a green contraption called a "hover", some more fish and 2 snails that I named Al and Lou. I tryed to hover out the crap on the bottom of the tank, as everytime the fish moved clouds of crap became suspended but found the contraption to be fairly useless as the gravel was what I belive to be the same sort of stuff that you would use on a drive way. Anyhow, I added my new buddies in the nieave hope of having a prosperus and long lived relationship together but the grim throuth stared to hit home when one by one the fish started to become a nice snack for the Hoplosternum that I had bought. I realised that somthing was wrong, beliving it to be the water quality I did some research. I discovered about weekly water changes and how the filter should be maintained.
Ive bought some de-chloriater and have done weekly 20% water changes, I have replaced some of the filter units as the old ones were in a bad state and the wrong type had been used.
I do not have a test kit but am looking to invest in one on may payday next week, can you advise a good kit?
I had added 2 more clown loaches, some angle fish, 2 neon tetras and some others that I cannot remember the names of. The fish listed on my signature are all that remane.
I have been treating the fish for white spot and was 6 days into a treatment.
I want to get this right, Iam prettty gutted about losing the little fellas, especially the clown loaches.
Thanks
