Hi, I am having a cyano outbreak at the moment and have been for nearly 2 weeks now. Can anyone suggest a remidy for this? I have lowered the length of time my lights are on, feeding less and checking for deadspots the moving powerheads.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanx

Phosphates are probably your problem. What is your input water source? Do you employ any active means of eliminating phosphate?

stop feeding frozen aswel. or at least de-frost it outside the tank and remove all the liquid with a net and tissue

I have been told it is most likely phosphates, but I don't know what I need to control and get rid of them. I am using saltwater from my LFS.

you can get a phosphate remover, it looks like coffee nd goes in a bag. then just put it somewhere it will get lots of flow.
mines on my drains in my sump

I have only started feeding frozen 1 week ago, but it was defrosted first. I usually defrost my food with some water out of my tank, then when defrosted, I pour the whole thing back in.

I currently have a Fluval 4 filter in my tank, would I be able to put that in there if i remove the media? I don't have a sump at the moment.

re the food:
the liquid is riddled with phosphates, thats how i used to feed my tank. But i tested the water and it was off the scale. So you want to stop as much of it as possible going into the tank. When i stopped adding the liquid and added the phosphate remover i noticed a difference overnight. You could turn the lights off for a day or two once you add teh remover to really get rid quickly.

re the filter:
i dont see why that wouldnt work.

Cheers Ben. I will give that a go today then. Hopefully see some results in a day or 2. :good:

i run rowaphos in a fluval 305.

Remove the ceramic media and replace with rowa.

I cut up some ladies (as opposed to mens) tights and used the "tubes of nylon" as filter bags. rowa is very fine so fishnets are out.

Agree, rowaphos/phosban/granular ferric oxide (GFO) is a good phosphate remover and can be used with a simple womens nylon in a filter or anywhere there's decent waterflow
