I am looking to set up a square tank in my new house. I am thinking 4 foot square (it'll be in the centre of a room) and a couple foot high. I have had a quote from a company of around £500, and it will be built on site. But i was wondering, how difficult is it to build one myself?

I know there are tutorials and stuff out there to show you how to do it. Personally, I'm not sure I'd trust a fish tank that I'd made myself! It's up to you though and how much you trust your own amateur handiwork.

Researched properly i personally think it'd be easy as pie to do, like building a computer seems hard but it's really common sense although if done wrong can be a mess, like a tank would be i guess lol.

Centre of the room? I'm thinking drilled with wier and sump for asthetics? All would add to hassle and risk of going wrong, if you could get all that for 500 I think its a good deal.

A wier and sump? How would the wier work? And how would the return water go back into the tank from the sump? I have not thought it through that much yet haha.

£500 is just the bare tank, nothing else! Its not THAT much really, but still think i could do it much cheaper! But anybody know any good custom build companies? The hassle of building, and the risk, and the fact it probably won't look as good may drive me to spend the money

Was thinking if its in room centre you wouldn't want filter pipe work on show so have a wier for the water to overflow into then through the base of the tank into a sump then pumped back up through base back into tank. That way all the wires and pipes could be inside the stand and not on show. Would be too complicated for me to consider building myself as a first custom build, thats why 500 would be a good price. Glass alone for that size tank would be a fair bit.

I got a fair price for mine from ac aquatics but they are local to me. Google custom aquariums.

I get you know. Yeh, i would want it all to be within the tank..... I wonder if a custom build company could incorporate a weir into the build.... hmm

I was looking at AC aquatics. Pretty expensive, but seems like they do a good job!

Thats what i was thinking about the glass - by the time you buy/transport all the glass, then cut it etc, i think it'll be more hassle than its worth
