Cuddly critter

I do see something black running but can't figure out what it might be...

Now I can see the video!
Definitely looks like a bear cub.
It's just trying to find the forest.

Trying to find somebody's dog food stash, more likely, until this annoying light started shining in its eyes. ha ha

if people didn't move into its territory, it wouldn't have to look for dog food

They've got room. This was probably a young male that mom told to move out, then wandered into town without really understanding what he was getting into. If he keeps showing up he'll be darted and relocated to the wilderness, but usually they find their way back into the hills without too much problem.

That was a cool video, thanks for sharing! I'm guessing just by the casual, relaxed dashcam footage that this isn't terribly unusual for where you are?

Seems to happen about once or twice a year. Moose and bears cause a bit of a sensation. Deer live in town and no one pays particular attention to them. When a mountain lion shows up things get a little more exciting, since they're pure predators. (Bears are opportunistic omnivores, so they usually aren't after children and pets)

It always trips me out to hear about the wildlife you can encounter there, when about the most dangerous thing you can run into here is a particularly ornery badger

is that a particularly ornery whistling badger?

Hey man, I had a badger make a slightly scary snuffling noise at me once when it appeared in my path from the long grass either side. I don't speak badger, but it very clearly meant "go away", and I listened, because if anyone is unlucky enough to be mauled to death in a humiliating way by a badger, it's me.
