Hi,

I am looking for some help or info. My ph level in my tank has dropped slightly so I normally add crushed coral, the problem is the last time I done that to one of my other tanks I started to get snails in my tank, its the only thing I can think started them. Can anyone please tell me how to stop this to keep a snail free tank. Can I boil the coral or will that damage it.

Thanks.

OK thanks. It was bought from a pet shop. Just set up another tank and was scared to put the coral in as I thought it was it that that infested my other tank with snails. If you think it is OK I will put some in. Been washing it all day.

Thanks for the Help.

Crushed coral will not introduce any snails into your tank but might give the ones already present the chance to survive. The increase in pH and mineral content will definitely make it easier for a snail to survive in a tank. With that said, I would not let that factor influence me too much in what I do to control the pH where I want it. By controlling the pH properly for your fish you may give other water dwellers a better or worse chance to survive, but that should not influence overmuch what you do with your tank. Letting the simple factor of better snail survival influence you too much can make you pause in a situation where decisive action on your part is needed.
