How much crushed coral do i need in a tank i want a ph of around 8. Also if i only need a bit how many pounds total substrate should i have?

Without your tank's dimensions answering that question is impossible. Regardless, why exactly do you want to raise your pH? Unless your plans are for rift lake cichlids or similar, it's unecessary. Even with mbuna etc, a slightly lower pH is still absolutely fine. A consistant pH is the most important thing. hat you want to do is avoid fluctuations and,f rom that point on, the exact value doesn't matter as long as it isn't extreme. In an attempt to help you out with your initial question, if I'm not mistaken, crushed coral buffers your water until it reaches a maximum of 8.0. I don't think the exact amount matters. I mean more won't make it rise to 9.0. It'll still only reach 8.0. However, if you don't add enough, it'll take longer to reach 8.0 after large water changes etc. I'd go for about half an inch if you don't want too much but want a reasonable layer. I'm not very good with this stuff so don't rely entirely on what I just said though :p
