I gave up on my first attempt with these two... I didn't know how the second attempt would go because he was still absolutely terrorizing her and refused to build a bubblenest of any useful size. Plus even though she barred up some when she was in her vase... as soon as she was released she didn't seem to regard him as anything but a predator.

But she had plenty of java moss to hide in and he'd seem to leave her alone when she was out of sight... so I left her there.

Two days later I catch them spawning, and putting the eggs into the nest together.

What does this teach us? Relax and be patient!

congratulations and nice pics. Those are some beautiful fish by the way.

Thanks!

I'm wary of getting closer and disturbing them. Plus of course the lighting is really bright and they're right under the only shadow. Oh well... plenty of spawning pics out there. :)

I regret now that I didn't take a picture of the female beforehand. I could show the pair. But she's a bit torn up now. She looks very much like the male, but she's more of a blue-magenta and he's more of a steel blue. We'll find out what that means for the babies.

You can see him more clearly here if you're curious.

Feeling sorry for the father at this point... at least some of them are smart enough to swim back up.

Went back to take a better picture when I saw that it was just too small for the usual picture quality, and it wasn't up next to the glass anymore. Figures. Best I've got. :)

The male has now built a new bubblenest somewhere else and transported every single one of the fry over to it. Why? Who knows. :)

congratulations on the spawn ;) we recently bred our crowntails as well, ours are going on 3+ weeks old. hungriest little buggers i've ever seen  make sure you've got lots of live food lined up for them ;)
