Hi all

I've been speaking to my LFS and they were talking about using more local fish breeders for their supply, obviously it would keep costs down but enable them to save on losses through shipping etc...

I'd fancied breeding a species for a while and decided on DP's - but decided swiftly against that idea and went on to my next favourite fish..... yup you guessed it!

I asked the LFS today if they would use me as a supplier if I was succesful and they agreed (they know me personally which probably helped!)

Anyway, I'm going to start off slowly by keeping a betta for a few months to see how I get on - I want to try and save any mistakes and do things properly.

My question is, I have a 2 gallon tank which is 12" wide and 8" high, is this going to be big enough for a 1/2 moon or crowntail or would something like a veiltail be better? (their fins look really large and I want to give them the room to fully 'stretch'!!!!)

I really appreciate the help from everyone on these forums and know I'll be getting good advice!

Thanks in advance!
Pete

2 gallons is anough for 1 fish to be happy I wouldnt divide it for a female or anything. And I think your going a little over your head with this. Bettas are difficult to breed. One because of their aggresion. Females if not spaning will get killed. Its thru experience.

Yeah. Definitely do your reading. The amount of equipment and time required for a spawn is extensive. I definitely recommend reading up on bettas in general, then look at breeding

Yea, that's why I want to get a male first, get used to keeping it and then go from there. The 2gal(uk) would be for the single fish.

You're preaching to the converted here, but obviously you have to say just incase.

I don't intend to jump into this at all, I'm definately keen to breed them but want to make sure I'm well aware of the finer points!

Also, don't know if anyone will see this now, I haven't got a light for the 2gal but I have got a spare coldcathode from my 22gal, has anyone had experience with coldcathode or moontubes for bettas?

Thanks again!

Hmm...I'm not familiar with cold cathodes, but bettas are really pretty flexible. A lot of them will be used to only ambient light as most breeders cannot afford to light every cup their bettas end up in. A lot of betta tanks, even of the proper size do not come with a light. I think any kind of lighting should be okay for the betta as long as it doesn't overheat the tank.

Of course, there could be a property of that lighting that I'm not aware of, but I think it should be okay.
