I read in an article pinned at the top of this forum that you really shouldn't breed veil-tails because petstores are full of them and its hard to find them good homes.

Out of curiousity then -- if you were to breed crown-tails or half-moons which would be easier to find homes for? Which is more "popular" or "in-demand" and would end up with a good home? They're both so pretty. :D

Well I'm just sort of thinking ahead right now. I'll be graduating from college in December (whooohooo finally!!) and will be moving out -- so I don't want to get any bettas till after I'm settled in my new place. But I'm doing the research now so hopefully I can be prepared! :) If I have a big enough place and enough spare time though, I'd love to have some of each.

half moons are extremely hard to breed. in any given spawn, only about %7 of them will ever achieve perfect half moon status, the rest will be delta, and super delta. you have a better chance with crown tails, just make sure you start with a good breeding pair. ;)

i think you should be experienced in bettas before you decide to spawn them

dont breed them yet, buy some and get expirienced with them

dont just rish into things as you mite be dissapointed with the result you get

I've kept bettas before, several over time since I was a little kid, I just don't have one at the moment. Though, I've never had one of the "fancy" ones, just veiltails from the petstore.

I love their personalities -- I had one that used to live in a small aquarium on a table right next to my desk -- he'd always stare at me while I was doing my homework.

But I understand what you mean with being experienced with them. Maybe I'll pick up another small aquarium and get another one (not to breed I mean), because come to think of it, I miss having him sitting next to me.

Many times you won't have a choice. Halfmoons are very difficult to breed. But crowntails at least breed "true". CT-toCT will produce CTs. However, with others, you will get at least 70% veiltail whether you like it or not.

I think you should breed for color.

Wow, I had no idea. :) Thanks for the info!

Maybe taking genetic bio as a college elective wasn't such a bad idea. ;)

I think mandi is doing the needed research now. FOr which I say good job.
BTW from I understand the CT gene is the dominant gene.
Ha thanks, that's what I'm trying to do. I'll be starting my last semester at college in a couple weeks -- and between that and working part-time, I wouldn't have time to give the needed attention to breeding and raising bettas. But hopefully sometime next year (after I graduate in Dec.) I'll find the time! :)

Hmm, interesting ... I don't suppose there's any websites out there that discuss the genetics of betta fish? I bet it would be a really interesting read! (Even if I only understood half of it haha.)
