Today I stuck inside-out foil crisp (potato chips) packets to the inside of the hoods of my various tanks using my favourite material - Duck tape!

I reckon I've got a 20-50% increase in light levels in the tanks.

I did similar with kitchen foil and pritt stick

Anna, be carefull if that packet gets warm it desindergrates very quickley into tiny peices which will fall into your tank. (I,ve tried different reflective materials in my growroom) I dont know if you remember but in one of your ealier posts I suggested mylar which pretty much looks like the inside of a crisp packet but is much thicker and the heat wont effect it. Kitchen Alfoil is not very reflective either compared to mylar.

The crisp packets were recommended because they can tolerate heat (that's why they're superior to the old plastic bags - the crisps can be put in them straight from the fryer). I have kept an eye on them but so far, so good.

If I can get some mylar, I'll get some. Any ideas where you can buy it from?

Hi Anna, the packets you are describing sound different to what I had in mind. I thought you meant potato chips from the deli etc. I tried a simular reflective material and it was ok for about 3 months but then become very brittle and as soon as you tried to touch it, it just broke up into tiny pieces. Actually when I think about it, its probably the light that makes it brittle rather than the heat. Hydroponics shops stock mylar and you can buy it by the metre, it should only cost a few pounds for that amount. Sorry cant suggest any stores as I dont know where they are in England but in Australia we have hydroponic shops everywhere. Actually hydroponics and aquariums are very simular and share a lot of the items needed: water pumps, heaters, ph testers, air pumps and stones, lights etc etc. I,ve noticed sometimes the same item in the hydroponic shop is quite a few dollars cheaper than in the aquarium shops, its worth checking out if you have a store nearby.
