im sure we all know how much money it can cost to purchase decorative things for our tanks. so what can we do or make at home that is safe, decorative, and offers a place to hide for our fish. i just read a post where someone mad a cave form a coconut what a great idea! what ideas can our wonderful members come up with? :dunno: maybe we could incorporate these ideas into some kind of contest or something. I know im still new but what do the mods think. hope this isnt a dumb idea :D :D :D :D

oh oh i nice idea would be to make a list(no chit chat) of thew things we can make then pin it, ill post a pic of my brick cave in this thread when i get home(or tomarrow) if you wanna do that w/ this thread

If yer really creative and skilled you could get a nice piece of carving wood and make some cool looking cave or somthing. just make sure you waterlog it before you put it in the tank.

i heard from someone that clean shot glasses worked well for caves for small fish. so i took that idea one step further and using aquarium sealant, "glued" extra gravel to the outside and the lip so it would just blend into the floor, worked well. the shot glass was about $3, the sealant about $4, the gravel i had leftover from my tanks.

The best DIY decoration I've seen on here in a while was the boiled cocanut shell cave..... v.nice.

I'm about to use small yoghurt pots as plant containers, to make it easier to do the gardening in future (this is my first tank, and it's doing very well after 3 weeks). I'm also working on a probe to fit onto my syphon tube, that'll stop the gravel being disturbed too much or sucked up when I'm getting rid of debris (I don't have any bottom feeders at all).

What difference does the boiling make for the coconut? I cut one in have, then cut an opening in the front. I placed it down rightside up, not sideways. I also drilled 3 holes in the top so air bubbles can escape.

P.S. It looks great with a bubble tower and blue light inside! :D And my red-finned (rainbow) Shark loves it.
