i have recentley been bought a tropical tank and it came with two red clawed crabs1 im trying to do as much research as possible to ensure they are heppy and i look after them properley.

however one crab like escaping the tank to sit on the heating unit, i noticed today that it has a white skirt at the back of its shell (around its bum) and i dont know what it is? is it ok? is this normal?

i recently losy 3 guppies due to ill health (they where bought as a surpirse from a pet shop and where sick when intoduced to ank, i have isolated and saved the other 3 but are worried thay have passed something on to the crabs)

am i being a worry wort?any advice/guidenace anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

i feed them on specialized crab food and blood worm.

anyone any idea what this white stuff is? it looks like someone had stuck white glue to the shell! the other crab dosent have this?

Okay, two things:

1: Is the tank cycled? You can learn about cycling in the 'New to the hobby' section.

2: Crab require a specialised set-up, allowing access to land and filtered brackish water. They can eat fish if they come across them in the tank, so it is best to keep them with just other crabs.

The white stuff sounds like a fungus of some sort, but I've never heard of crabs growing funus. Is it fluffy or hard? Can you get a picture?

the tank is cycled, and they have acces to "land" i am adding an additional ledge for them to escape to.

this morning i came in and found an empty shell ! i think the white stuff may have been the shell shedding? is that possible? the crab look ok and iv added an iodine solution to the water to help with the shell hardening. howvere the oter crab i have has a white line like the other did and i think it will shed too.

i wish the pet shop owener had warned my arents about the crabs they just sold them to them and said it would be ok.
