My swimming crab is doing something weird...he's obviously been getting ready to shed the last couple days, but today I'm not sure if he tried to shed and failed or if this is just the first time I've seen the steps leading up to crab shedding. The back of his carapace has stretched out where the joint would normally be for him to come out. It's soft, but the membrane doesn't look like its broken where it would for him to shoot out the back. He still has full use of all his legs and everything and is running around now because I agitated him, so I was thinking he hadn't tried to shed yet, but then again I've never actually witnessed the shedding process in crabs (only seen the before and after). I'm not sure if this is normal or if there's something I need to do quickly to keep him from getting stuck in his skin. Any quick advice from anyone?
He's had a whole lot of good sheds (as frequent as every 2-3 weeks), so if it is a shedding problem it'll be a first.
