Come home last night to find this sitting at the front of my tank. Its about 1.5" across so not huge ime just qurious as to what it is and weather its safe in my tank???

Ive seen it on a few occasions now and its been in the tank for months ive just never been able to get a good shot of it like this 1

From the picture you will se another set of claws at the front of its body these are infact 2 fan like things that it waves about all the time

Quite the monster  Claws look like its trouble but the fans say otherwise. If its waving about fans its a filter feeder of some kind and wont bother anything in your tank. But thoughs claws are something else. You dont see huge claws on filter feeders  One freaky crab that is :good:

I've found the golden rule with crabs is: TRUST NO ONE

Even the most "reef safe" of crabs will sometimes decide to start eating corals.

Not sure on the ID, but those claws look like the claws of a predator to me, if it was my tank (and assuming i could catch it) it would be removed immediately.

Agreed. Can't ID it for sure (there's thousands of these things in the ocean) but the claw shape does indicate an opportunist... The only crabs I trust are the little anemone and acropora symbiote crabs and this is certainly NOT one of those ;)

ill try my best to remove it when i do the change over into my new 50 gallon and give my mantis something to play with......may be cruel but will keep my mantis on its toes and give it something new to play with.

ya never know they may even become friends.........doubt that alot though :shifty:

I'm not to good on IDing at all  But I think that thing looks like trouble as well

Kinda scary too!

Hey, I posted in your Mantis thread....can we get any updates? I'm really curious :good:

Not realy to much to report with the mantis not much goes on with it realy.

Its still alive and kicking though and is starting to colour up more now its body is a dark green with red and yelow bits all over it. Ide love to post some pictures up of it but only trouble being its a very shy creature and doesnt come out much it just sticks its head out of one of its hiding places and most of the time if it sees your looking at it it will shoot back into its hole.

Quite a boring creature in some ways but very interesting in other ways. i feed it 2 times a week and probably see it fully 2 times a week aswell.

I had a gorilla crab as a hitchhiker and it ate my second royal gamma caught it but i love it cuz it grew on me so i stuck him in my sump and i feed him 3times a week.
