Hi guys. My new boy Jacob is doing great, although I'm concerned about pop eye, I don't know if he has it, but I'm sure his eyes are slightly bigger than a few days ago.
Could someone tell me what these tank specs mean, and if the water is ok?

Much appreciated.

Ph = 7.2 (approx)
Ammonia = .5 to .7 around there.
NitrIte = 0
NitrAte = 0 (approx)

Should I do a water 50-70% water change?

Thank you, here's a picture.

When ever i have a trace of ammonia or nitrItes i do 50% water changes twice a day until it's down and then continue doing 30% water changes daily for a week.

Unfortunately i can't help you with the popeye as i have never had to deal with it before (thats if it is popeye) but his eyes do look rather big.

Hopefully someone will be along soon to advise on that.

Good luck

T xx

if the tank is filter then 2 x 50% water changes in one day is not the best way to do things. This will give a high chance of destroying the bacterial colony in the filter and put the stats back to where a level of ammonia is present, so never correcting the issue. I would only do 30% every day until the stats correct themselves.
If he has no filter then you can afford to do a 100% water change every other day to maintain great water stats
Clean water will help with popeye but also a treatment such as mxyacin which can be added over a 4 day period once a day according to the tank size and recommended dose. If he has no filter then this medication can be added after his daily water change, if he has a filter then i would continue to add it as stated but making sure its after his evry other day 30% water change.

Not sure if you have mxyacin in your country though :unsure: but if not there must be a substitute.

Myxazin is fairly hard to find here.... you can usually get antibiotics though, which are even better.

How are his eyes, Janene, any bigger?
The tank is not cycled - is there a pet store you can sucker into handing over some mature media?

His eyes aren't any bigger this morning, pretty much the same. I did a 50% water change last night. I will do one again this afternoon.

I'm not sure if I can get some mature media from shops. I'd be a bit fearful that they have diseases too...I mean he seems perfectly healthy - appetite like a horse, although I'm giving him a couple of days of fasting as he's getting a bit of a belly on him. Will see how that progresses. other than that, he's looks fit as a fiddle.

i dunno if id worry so much about his eyes....my older boy has big eyes like that too. always has for a year now.
he is rather handsome.
enjoy! :good:

Really? Ok, well that is a relief, as I wasn't too sure. I will keep a close eye on them (no pun intended!)
to make sure they don't get any bigger....
So Pop Eye - is it something that is clearly obvious? As I've only ever heard about it, not seen it in any fishes.

Thanks :)

Pop eye is an infection that causes the eye to swell up and there is usually pus involved, so the eye will look red or cloudy, and it will be at least twice its usual size. It will often look telescoped - google black moor goldfish. What's normal for their eyes looks a lot like what pop eye looks like in other fish.
