hi everyone,

I have been having horrible problems with my fishes. I have had my 50 gallons fish tank for 8 weeks now. When we bought it we waited 1 week to buy all our new friends. but unfortunately we were not told that we had to buy a test kit for the water and we were not told how to change the water. What we had been doing is changing all the water of the tank evry week and a half. this of course was a terrible thing to do. Friday I went to the pet store and told them that my angel fish had a cracked fin and that all the other fishes didn't look very healthy. so he asked me what I was doing with the tank( food, water change and maintenance) I mentioned aswell that they were swimming very low almost laying on the bottom of the tank and the swimming pattern was diffrent that at the beginning. My pleco was also changing colours from very dark to almost grey. They told me to put aquarium doctor WSp agains whiteposts, velvet, slime lower parasite. I did what the guy told me and treated my fish with it but the next day 6 of them died( 2 ghost fishes and 4 golden pencilfis. What do you guys think i should do? can someone help me

It sounds like your tank has been (or is) going through a cycle. Here's some useful info:

Cycling

:rip: ghostfishes and pencilfish. I hope the rest pull through...

I know you sent me a PM about this earlier, but I missed it since i was looking for it in the emergency section. Sorry. I've got a few other questions for you, in addition to what was asked above.

How long has it been since your last water change, and what % did you change?

Have you cleaned the filter in any way?

Are you using dechlorinator when you do water changes?

Do you have a test kit at home? If so, can you please post the results, or if not, take some water to a pet store and ask them to test it for you? Specifically, it would really help to know ammonia and nitrite.
