Would that type of reg fit saya fire extinguisher, or does it have to be used with welding gear?

Are the threads and fixing sizes for CO2 delivery standardised ?

Fire extinguishers, jbl, aquamedic, pub, welding bottles all use the same standard CO2 connection in the uk, possibly Europe as well, but not the states. Industrial CO2 bottles and regulators use a different connection so be careful not to get one of those.

hmmm i`m thinking maybe it would just be easyer to just buy a jbl (or the like) regulaor and then just team it up with a bottle an some hosing

yes I think that too!! you've enough things to shout at as it is without more DIY! :p

I'd agree. If I was setting up a system now I'd just buy a JBL reg or similar that has a built in needle valve. This is so much easier than buying a regulator and needle valve separately as you don't have to fiddle about with getting the low side pressure correct. The low side pressure is fixed in the JBL reg and all you have to do is adjust the bubble rate with the needle valve. You can then buy the CO2 bottle and diffuser/reactor of your choice.

I have a complete JBL Co2 setup for sale. Bottles need refilling, reagent solutions and pH calibration solutions needed and a probe for the pH monitor. (cheap off ebay). Cost quite a bit £300
2x 500ml cyclinders, gauge, difusser, under gravel heating cable, pH monitor. All for around £100 plus P&P Uk only.
Anyone interested.

Ian ive got a top tip way to set up a pressuried kit for really cheap.
I got the following for about £70.
2kg fire extingusher
glass diffuser
bubble counter
tubing

I think I'll endup with a similar setup to you Ginge. Question though, what's this I'm reading about needle valves? what are they? what do they do and why are they a pain in the arse?

With normal aquarium regs the needle vavle is encorpoated into the reg but with welding regs it is not. It is just simply so that you can get the precise amount of Co2 pumping into the tank.
