Hey, I was wondering if I could raise a Macrognathus circumcinctus in my 10 gallon aquarium, as I have decided it would be too tough to breed bichirs.
So, would it work? I would just raise it in there until it's 4 or 5 inches, then I'll move it to my 30 gallon.
I would put one straight into my 30, but I'm worried my 10 inch Marbled Sand Goby beast would eat it
Cheers,

Well if you mean your goby is an Eleotris picta or similar species of sleeper, it *should* reach 16"-20".
Plus the tank is too small for a striped raphael.

IMO, I wouldn't even keep two bichirs in a 30 gallon...

It's neither species of goby. It's a Oxyeleotris Marmorata.
And I know both of them are too big for the 30 (raphael & goby), they'll go into my 100 gallon when I get it set up.
And it's only one bichir. The other one's a spiny eel.
Cheers,

lol, thats even worse, they hit 20"+

Plus, why would you put a 20"+ growing fish in a 30 gallon? Even for a few months?

stunted comes to mind...

It's 25+" to be more exact ;)
They are also very slow growers. Even in a huge tank (4-5') it would take over 2 years for a 4" Marbled Sand Goby to grow to 10 inches.
They are very long-lived fish.
I put a fish that will grow over 2 feet in a 30 gallon tank because it was still growing, and I don't have the big tank for it. Yet.
I plan on talking to my LFS about custom-building a bigger tank for them (about 78x36x24"). Not sure of the exact volume, but it would be the goby's home, as well as the home for several other big fish.
It might not be a tank, it might be a pond, which would cost a fair bit less than a glass tank.

Now, before you people think that history is repeating itself as seen here, you can know that unlike before, when I just went on a crazy dreaming rampage, I know this isn't etched in stone. Yet. This is a lot smaller than the 2,000 gallon mentioned in the link, this is only 293 gallons.
The pond will be entirely made out of plywood, with a pond liner. It would have 2-3" of sand and would be healily planted and decorated.
I will hopefully get this pond set up, and when I do, I'll post pictures.
Cheers,
GobyMaster
