I won't be buying any but I am interested to know if it would be possible to keep shrimps in my tank. Current fish are Danios, cories, couple of apple snails. Its a two foot, 63 litre tank. Sand and live plants and bog wood. I know absolutely nothing about them and If i did eventually want to keep some I'd do some research but any info from you guys would be greatly appreciated. :D

Lynz;
the only shrimps I have found that are safe from danios
are Cameroon armoured shrimp Atyopsis gabonensis,
Common fan shrimp Atyopsis moluccensis, Bamboo fan shrimp
Atyopsis spinipes and the Chameleon Shrimp Macrobrachium pilimanus

I would however say that the danios were nipped by the chameleon shrimp
and it was quickly got rid of back to the shop.

I tried many of the smaller shrimp with danios and most only lasted a week of two before being eaten.

Checkout this site for pics of the afore mentioned shrimp

Thanks for that. I have never really paid much attention to the shrimps in my favourite LFS, but from what I remember they were tiny little things and would probably be eaten :(. Not sure what type they were. Cherry? :S Not keen on naything with claws :-(

depending on your tank size I'd go with any of the fan shrimp.
they are so much fun to watch.

You can get some Amano shrimp they wont be eaten by any of your fish. I've got them along with danios, rams, harlequin rasboras and cories.

They grow to about 1.5 inches and are pretty good algae eaters and cleaners.

Unfortunately the same cant be said for my newly purchased cherry shrimp... my rams have taken a liking to them

Well I think my LFS sells both of those kind of shrimp but they are totsy. I have plenty algae in the tank too which would have been great for them.

Shrimp are by far the most entertaining inhabitants of my tank.
Not to mention beneficial, clean substrate of excess food, algae removal, and the ocassional death in the tank is quickly cleaned up so there is almost no water quality effects.

At the moment I have a small school of danios
school of neon tetras
a couple of clown loaches
4 blue claw whisker shrimp
10 ghost shrimp
3 singapore bamboo/wood shrimp
couple dozen amano shrimp
couple dozen cherry shrimp
6 or so bumblebee shrimp
4 red nosed shrimp
a few nertina snails
countless mts snails - fodder for the loaches

so adding shrimp to your tank is something I highly recommend

Got three amano yesterday but I can't find them
I think they have squashed themselves into cracks in the bog wood. I've checked everywhere else. :-(

I believe they are notorious hiders and many people have said that they haven't seen them for months - only to suddenly appear.
Fear not yet.....

They also change their shell every once in a while, the leftovers look like a dead shrimp so don't get scared!

Is it true that they can bury themselves in sand?

So happy!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
They are hiding and have taken up residence in the wee space where the filter hooks onto the suckers. Theres deffinitely two I jsut hope the third is there two. I will create more hiding places for them to encourage them to move about. Are all amano shrimps ahy like this?
